Análisis
In comparison to many of their contemporaries, Bob Marley & the Wailers' recording career is relatively straightforward. Their early material was all cut for Studio One and their later years were spent at Island, and there are a few short years in between when the group was at somewhat loose ends, thus bouncing around a handful of producers before hooking up with Lee Perry. As fans are well aware, it's this period that has seen such a proliferation of compilations -- and few contain any information, leaving all but the most learned at a loss to sort out the resulting mess. The confusion is compounded by so many sets that are seemingly dedicated exclusively to the band's work with Lee Perry, but which toss in the odd production to further muddy the waters. Yet during this same period, the Wailers were also self-producing their own singles and releasing them on their newly launched Tuff Gong label. Compared with the Perry material, these numbers have seen much less action. A handful of them -- "Redder Than Red," "Nice Time," "Thank You Lord," and "Satisfy My Soul Jah-Jah" (incorrectly titled "Power and More Power" on this set) -- appear here, among a plethora of Perry productions and a handful overseen by Leslie Kong, Bunny Lee, and Johnny Nash/Danny Sims. As always, there are numerous strong numbers but equally notable omissions, and so fans will have to decide for themselves whether the set is worth buying for the Wailers' own self-releases. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music Guide
