<p>What started out as Vanessa Williams roaming through her old record collection became EVERLASTING LOVE, an all-covers album of 1970s love songs. One of the most impressive things about this particular project is how Williams went somewhat off the beaten path in choosing material. In hooking up with longtime musical arranger Rob Mathes, the native New Yorker has slipped her smooth and supple voice into pristine arrangements that emanate romantic vibes. Williams's notable choices range from a subtle, bossa nova-flavored take on Stevie Wonder's "Send One Your Love" to a stripped-down version of "Midnight Blue" that would do Melissa Manchester proud. George Benson (whose '70s jazz-to-pop crossover songs made him a household name) contributes guitar to a Quiet Storm-like "Never Can Say Goodbye," giving a more mature sheen to this Jackson 5 smash. Benson's presence is also ideal when he plays Billy Preston to Williams's Syreeta on a rendition of "With You I'm Born Again" that perfectly fits the duo's vocal styles.
