Now, as I've mentioned somewhere else... Van Hunt wears his influences on his sleeve. You can go through and name all of the soul greats one by one that you hear in the music. But what sets Van apart is how he conglomerates all of those influences. In one song, he can sound anywhere from Rick James to Curtis Mayfield to Prince. "The Thrill of This Love" is probably my favorite off of this album. I just really dig the Prince vibe to it. And it's just very... warm. It kind of makes you wish you were right with your significant other when you listen to it. Which is pretty much the aim of the song. Hunt's singing about how fun it is to be with this particular woman- "Cosmic rays shoot through my body while we play..." That's some pretty strong stuff, eh? Like aforementioned, this song is very guitar-driven in the style of The Purple One. And I LOVE the dreamy female vocals in the chorus. I can't quite determine whether it wants to be a rock song or an R&B song (it's kind of reminiscent of "Hold My Hand" from his self-titled debut). Hunt has grown more ambitious in his experimentations, and if this song is any indication of what's to come... I hope his shelved released (Popular) gets to see the light of day. If not, I'll just have to download it somewhere off the web. Artists like Van Hunt aren't a dime-a-dozen. So if you're sleepin' on the brother... I might have to wake you up with an air horn.
