The Velvet Underground was a pioneering experimental rock band from New York City first active from 1965 to 1973. Its best-known lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist Lou Reed, bassist/violist John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker. The band also collaborated with Nico for their debut album in 1967, under the supervision of producer and pop artist Andy Warhol. Some see The Velvet Underground as being a bridge between the pacifist themes of the late 60s and the sheer chaos and indifference of the mid-70s punk movement. |

Dandy Warhols at Emo's East [Show Preview]
Date: May 22, 2012 It seems oddly appropriate that Dandy Warhols frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor was born in 1967; the same year The Velvet Underground released their landmark self-titled debut. From the band name, to the obvious homage on the cover art for their 2003 record Welcome to the Monkey House, to the lazy, Lou Reed-y drawl Taylor-Taylor takes on at times, The Dandy Warhols owe a large debt to the Velvets ...

Something different is going on with The Beatles ...

“Hooligans and swindlers”: the communist regime and the Plastic People
Date: Apr 28, 2012 In the 1970s the communist authorities tolerated popular music as long as it was insipid, colourless and unoriginal – everything that the Czech psychedelic rock band The Plastic People of the Universe most definitely was not. Their music was inspired by Frank Zappa and The Velvet Underground, their lyrics anarchic, their behaviour unconventional and their hair long. In 1976 four members of the ...

Date: Apr 18, 2012 In the glory days of rock ’n’ roll, artists changed all the time: Dylan went electric, became a Christian, and went back to his irascible, inscrutable self; Bowie became a different character every couple of years; and entirely separate family trees of rock bands emerged from the influence of each of the Velvet Underground’s first three albums.

Caveman channels the city's 'wild vibe'
Date: Apr 13, 2012 The indie rockers of Caveman are from New York by way of New York, not Kansas or Hollywood or a unicycle co-op on the outskirts of Portland. They've walked the same streets as the Velvet Underground and Talking Heads. I spoke with drummer Stefan Marolachakis about the group's formative years and its biggest career milestone, the debut album Coco Beware .
