Quince años después de lanzar su primer single (500 copias del hit balear, ‘Mother Earth’/‘The Hump’), Rick Smith y Karl Hyde todavía disfrutan del éxito iniciado en aquel entonces. Hyde y Smith se conocieron en 1981 en el Art Collage de Cardiff, en Inglaterra. Desde entonces participaron en diferentes proyectos juntos. Freur fue su primera banda new wave, la cual llegó a ser soporte de Eurythmics en 1990, justo antes de separarse.
