Larry Mullen Jr. (octubre 1961) puso un anuncio en un tablón del colegio Mount Temple buscando gente para formar un grupo. Bono, Adam Clayton, Dave Evans ("The Edge") y su hermano, Dick Evans, respondieron al anuncio y se formó el grupo como banda de versiones de los Beatles, de los Rolling Stones, etc, se llamaron Feedback antes de cambiarse a The Hype en 1977. Enseguida, Dick dejó el grupo para irse con los Virgin Prunes.
