BPK - How to Play Scarlet's Walk (Tori Amos) Piano/Keyboard

How to Play Scarlet's Walk by Tori Amos (and alter-ego Isabel). Chords are combinations of notes played simultaneously. This song is in Eb minor, so the relevant notes are Eb, F, Gb, Ab, Bb, B (Cb), and Db. Although it's outside of the key signature, the note C (natural) also appears, as Tori craftily weaves it in. No other note should be played. This means no D, no E, no G, and no A will ever appear in this song when you play it. Songs in Eb minor are also technically in D# minor, since it is the key signature that has 6 flats, equivalent to the key signature having 6 sharps. Eb and D# are the same note, known as "enharmonic equivalents." If they're the same note, why not have the same exact name? The answer is because D# serves a completely different "function" than Eb. #'s traditionally resolves upward while b's tend to resolve downward. You don't have to know any or all of this to play what's here, but it's relevant because I consistently refer to the note B as "B" when it is actually "Cb (flat)" in function. I also refer to the Cb (flat) major chord as B major. I called it B so that it will be visually easier to follow. I refer to chords throughout this tutorial and this is how to build the relevant chords: Eb minor = Eb + Gb + Bb B Major = B + Eb + Gb (technically, this is Cb Major, as mentioned above) Gb Major = Gb + Bb + Db Db Major = Db + F + Ab Db Suspended = Db + Gb + Ab (resolve the Gb down to F) Ab minor = Ab + B + Eb Ab minor 7 = Ab + B + Eb + Gb Bb minor 7 = Bb + Db + F + Ab For the left hand, you can just play the base note of the chord (also known as the "root" of the chord, which is the note for which the chord is named). You can play all of the notes at once and hold them, and as you get more comfortable with them, you can strum the note and/or chords to emulate the song's percussion as much as you'd like. Scarlet's Walk is in a 4/4 time signature. It's one of Tori's haunting pieces with great lyrics and a well thought out placement as the glue that holds the album Scarlet's Walk together. Hope that helps! -BPK
