Review - Amazon.com :
Biting, sometimes base satire and humor populates this 21-cut comedy-rock debut from actor-musician Jack Black and his band, Tenacious D. Sort of like a trashier, more casual and less musical Beck, vocalist-guitarist Black and guitarist-vocalist Kyle Gass, with help from Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Redd Kross's Steve McDonald, and Page McConnell of Phish, deliver oddball musings that will appeal mostly to fans of the talented Black, whose earned a following thanks to memorable, frenetic turns in the films Hi Fidelity and Jesus' Son. The songs and "bits" include the wonderfully, intentionally melodramatic "Wonderboy," Black ordering "four Chicken McNuggets" on "Drive Thru," and the funny ode to vocalist Ronnie James Dio, where Black observes, "Dio has rocked for a very long time / Now it's time for him to pass the torch." With often intentionally droll and dumb humor smartly executed like a latter-day version of Bob & Doug McKenzie with a dash of Spinal Tap, this more-comedy-than-rock debut is likely to achieve cult status. --Katherine Turman

- I've been waiting for this for a long time!
I must admit that, even though I've been waiting for this album, I was a little skeptical when I heard that there would be full band versions of the D's classic tunes. I mean, I love the acoustic guitar. And the sound that these guys get, absolutely amazing. Well to anyone who might have had the skepticism I did, let me tell you, you need not worry. This album is incredible. It's still very acoustic based and the full rock sound builds on the songs previous versions from Kage and Jables short lived HBO series. There are some really funny comedy sketches in between some of the songs, also. Jack Black definitely lets his wit shine. This album is a must have for any Tenacious D fan.

- I, for one, am happy
I'm sure a bunch of "O.G." whiners will be falling all over themselves to be the first to criticize this album for not being "raw" or "indie" enough, but as a fan of the D who was into them before there was ever any talk of cutting a record myself, I'd like to congratulate them on their studio debut and hope that they earn as much success (and beautiful, beautiful dollar bills) as they possibly can in the mainstream arena. They've earned it. Studio or no, they are two of the most original and hilarious artists to grace my ears in a long, long time.

As far as the album goes, the full blown studio production only hurts a few tracks (Greatest Song Tribute) and helps all of the rest (Explosivo actually lives up to it's name! Rock Your Socks Off really will!). I am a big fan. Listening to this album is like seeing old friends with a completely new look.

- A Hard Day's Rockin'
OK, I know what you are saying. What could I possibly say that you haven't heard about this CD? Well I can start by telling you that I am a huge Tenacious D fan. I saw them in concert once already and have tickets to see them again soon. Now I had the oppurtunity to listen to this CD before it came out but I decided that I would wait for it to be released and listen to it in full force. Justlike most of you I read all of the reviews that said this album was overproduced and it wasn't the real D. All of that. So when I heard this album I truely thought that I wouldn't like it. I listened to it once and fell in love. I have not listened to another CD since I bought it. Now here is what you need to understand, if you have ever seen the D live you know it is just JB and KG and their two guitars. I think a lot of people were expecting that when they bought the CD. Everybody knows how great Jables and Rage are, but what surprised me was how well the songs that I loved sounded with drums and keyboards and electric guitars. Everybody has to admit that Wonderboy sounds great with the drums and keyboards. City Hall kicks butt and they go back to their acustic roots with Karate and Kyle Quit the Band. The fact that these songs rock both on the CD and live should not be taken lightly. The skits on the CD are extremely funny and sound like they haven't been rehearsed, just simple JB and KG. And that is funny stuff!!! Do yourself a favor, if you don't own this CD, buy it. And if you have it and are disappointed, give it another listen and open your mind. You will sing these songs for the rest of the day before long. Obey the D!!

- The band has asked me to read this ...
Tenacious D is, just as they say, THE GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD. In 1997, some dude (Lee, probably) posted on his website that "Tenacious D is the greatest band in the entire history of whatever the [heck] they are!" I couldn't have said it better myself.

If you've never heard of the D, you need to catch them live. Their blend of comedic acoustic heavy metal is like nothing you've ever heard. In their own words: "Kyle's fingers be silver/Jack's voice, then, be gold." You've probably seen Jack Black in movies such as The Jackal, The Cable Guy, Saving Silverman and Shallow Hal. What you don't know is that he can sing his ... off!!! And Kyle Gass is no slouch on his ax. Their songs are hilarious, yet they really rock.

Long-time D fans should expect more than JB & KG on their twin acoustics. This CD boasts full-band versions of faves such as "Explosivo" and "Kyle Quit", as well as totally new tracks. "Wonderboy" must be their first non-X-rated song, but it still rocks. And "... Her Gently" embodies a lesson that all us guys should learn. I just wish they'd included "Jesus Ranch" and "Warning" and "The History of Tenacious D" on it.

WARNING: The Surgeon General of Rock says that, even if you've heard the D before, this CD will still BLOW YOUR ... OUT!

- This Disc is great
Unfortunately, I've never been lucky enough to catch the D live, but I did see all of the HBO shows they did. I thought Jack and Kyle were hilarious, so when I heard about this CD, I knew I had to get it. After a couple listens, I know I'm glad I did. The disc includes comedy bits, new versions of songs I heard on the shows (Tribute, Lee, Double Team, Karate, Explosivo), and great new (though they've probably played them in concert) songs. Wonderboy and Rock your Socks were both immediate standouts. I'm also pretty sure that [edited] her Gently is the dirtiest ballad of all time. (Oh yeah, and there's the added bonus that Friendship Test was written by Mr. Show co-creator Bob Odenkirk). So if you're a fan of the D, pick this one up. If you aren't, but like great comedy (and aren't squeamish about "explicit lyrics") you should give it a shot.
