No less an authority than Bob Dylan called Smokey Robinson "America's greatest living poet." Robinson wrote or cowrote numerous Motown classics for other artists, and songs with complex, emotional lyrics such as "The Tears of a Clown," "The Tracks of My Tears," and "I Second That Emotion," that became major hits for his own group, the Miracles. A cursory knowledge of Robinson's work is essential for any fan of pop music, and that's about what you'll get from this set. It doesn't get too deep into the Miracles' incredible run of 29 Top 40 hits recorded between 1960 and 1975, but it does include the bare essentials, plus two from the early days of Robinson's solo career, and one--"Love Machine"--that the Miracles took to the top of the charts without him. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer review - 2001-06-27
- GREAT FOR THE BUDGET MINDED!This collection may not be as "meaty" as "Ultimate Collection" but it provides Smokey's biggest and best hits from his solo career. His best songs were his biggest chart hits both solo and with the miracles. If you want an introduction to Smokey the solo artist then this collection if for you, if you want a longer playing cd with more songs get the "Ultimate Collection"

- Ooh Baby Baby, Is This Set Skimpy!MCA's 20th Century Masters series has only one goal in mind: to make money. Most of the releases in the series have only ten or eleven songs. For a REAL introduction to the genius of Smokey Robinson, get Motown's generous 25-track Ultimate Collection for just a couple dollars more. Sure, you won't get the three solo songs on the 20th Century Masters collection, but the inclusion of an additional 17 Sixties classics more than make up for it.

- An ample sample. Original recordings in brilliant sound. This was the only Smokey Robinson & The Miracles I could find in my hometown and I was very pleased with it. It features 11 of Smokey & The Miracles's biggest hits in superlative sound. Smokey Robinson was one of the greatest songwriters in pop history and a major influence to Bob Dylan who referred to him in 1965 as "America's best poet". Whoever said the sound on this CD was bad must be listening it through a tin can because this was one of the best sounding Motown releases I've ever bought. Also these are the original recordings and some of his best, "Tracks Of My Tears" "Oooh Baby Baby" "Mickey's Monkey" "Tears Of A Clown" "I Second The Emotion" "Shop Around" "You Really Got A Hold On Me" "More Love"plus an extended studio verson of "Love Machine" from 1985 along with a couple of solo Smokey hits from the early 80's, "Cruisin" "Just To See Her". I admit that 11 classic Smokey songs may seem a bit skimpy, but if you don't have any CD's by him and you're on a budget, this is an excellent purchase. These would probably be your favorite 11 Smokey cuts even if you had 100 Smokey cuts in a deluxe boxed set. A good deal.

- Don't waste your money.Want to know one of the main reasons why so many people pirate music? This CD is the perfect example. I have a number of albums put out by the folks of this socalled Millennium Collection. There isn't a single one that qualifies as a genuine anthology. 10 or 11 songs is nothing but a scam when you are expected to pay full price. I sincerely wish the worse for the jerks who came up with this idea of cheating the customer for the umteenth time. Get your copy at the library like I did or find it used here on Amazon for under $5 including shipping.
