I can understand Shania's younger fans being disappointed when they play this album expecting it to be more of the same following her previous four...
I, on the other hand, am 45 years old and have no qualms over admitting to being a bit of a head banger (still...). The first LP (vinyl) I ever bought was Deep Purple's 'Made in Japan' (I also have most everything they've ever done since, in all their various guises) so this album is right up my street.
Blokes my age have a 'thing' about raunchy, leather-clad rock-chicks belting out some good hard driving numbers - Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Girlschool, Cher of course... So to think of a young Shania up on stage giving it what she's got with these works for me.
For the serious fan this a must as it showcases perfectly the talent she had developed during her formative years. Her later albums produced by Mutt have toned down her vocals, as you tell if you compare her album tracks with the live performance CDs/DVDs. She has a very powerful voice with which she can belt out a number seemingly effortlessly, to great effect.
If you see her performing her songs from 'UP!' (International versions) live, with their hard driving guitar riffs and prominent drum breaks, it's obvious this is where her heart lies. I like it, and I've given it 4**** in context, so...
DON'T buy this if you don't like this genre of music, cos if you do you'll hate it (see some of the other reviews)
DO buy it if you're over a certain age, and enjoyed this genre in the '80s and have become a Shania fan since. You won't be disappointed...
