There's a reason why music critics should never suggest that a certain singer would sound good singing the phone book. Eventually some smart-ass is going to try. Until then, we have genre exercises where a notable singer takes on an even more notable collection of songs and proceeds to convince us that neither the songs nor the singer are very good after all. No, I'm not talking about Pussy Galore's rendition of Exile On Main Street (though it applies), but rather this latest Rod Stewart album where up against a string section any Muzak station would envy, Rod the Mod hauls out his aching larynx and sings for the stars of the 1930s. "Moonglow," "The Nearness Of You," "The Very Thought Of You"; the songs simply roll down that hill of nostalgia and never quite make it up the next one. There's a late-night TV crowd just waiting for this one, but sane folks will wait for Rod to turn out a collection of songs from his own nostalgic past with a band able to kick out the jams and more importantly his jams.
