Recording information: 1969 - 1972.

BLACK DIGNITY is not a comprehensive Peter Tosh compilation by any stretch, nor does it claim to be. Focusing on his early Trojan singles, this generous, twenty-four track collection surveys the period when Tosh was still playing with Bob Marley and the Wailers, yet was yearning to express himself more fully. On several of these cuts Tosh is backed by the Wailers. Elsewhere, he is backed by the Destroyers, the Love Generation, and Lee Perry's house band the Upsetters, among others.

The Wailers' cuts, arguably Tosh's best known early work, are here. These include "Stop The Train" and "Four Hundred Years" (which appeared in alternate versions on CATCH A FIRE), and "Brand New Second Hand" (which also appeared on Tosh's solo debut LEGALIZE IT). Tosh had yet to fully develop the powerful political conscience in his songwriting, but there is ample evidence in "Arise Black Man" and the title track. Throughout, Tosh's superb songwriting, instrumentation (there are also several fine dub instrumentals here courtesy of producers like Lee Perry and Joe Gibbs), and powerful voice make this an indispensable collection of early roots reggae.
