- Another greedy record company release
In regard to the review posted by SUP-RBEAST, I'm not whining and I am an Ozzy fan, but this release should never have happened. The true fans bought the box set and there is no reason that the extra tracks on this release couldn't have been put on there just as easily, but since the record company and the Ozzy camp felt the need to make some more money (as if they both really needed it) they decided to tack on a couple of outtakes from the original sessions and repackage it as "new" product. If you want your fans to support you, then you also have to support them by giving them their money's worth and not issuing rehashed product. Everyone is starting to do this now and as long as the public buys it, the record companies will keep it coming. With all that said, the cover versions on here work for the most part, some more than others, so I would have to give it 3 or 4 stars for the music, but the marketing ploy brings it down.

- The Emperor Has No Clothes
No question about it. Ozzy was a force to reckon with in his day. He lived the rock and roll lifestyle to its fullest, and came close to cashing in his chips many times. Songs like "Crazy Train," "Flying High Again," "You Can't Kill Rock and Roll," and "I Don't Know" are definitive Ozzy Osbourne. (Man, I love those songs) He definitely earned the title of "Madman of Rock and Roll" in the 80's and into the early 90's.

So what's an aging Heavy Metal star to do in his later years? You've got to keep those paychecks rolling in. And while you still enjoy making music, singing about Crazy Trains, Barking at the Moon, and how you Can't Kill Rock and Roll begins to look a little goofy after you're well past the age of fifty.

Do you quietly fade away, enjoying your golden years, or do you release an album of odd cover tunes? Why Ozzy chose to put his legacy and reputation on the line with a tired sounding covers album, I don't know. "The Osbournes" made him out to be somewhat of lovable, crotchety, bumbling old man. This CD doesn't help.

As much as I love what Ozzy's done over his amazing three decade career, I think the time has come to call it a day. But for one reason or another his camp has decided to release an embarrasing collection of cover tunes that fall outside the music genre he's known for! Ugh! Why?

Now there are certain artists that have successfully gone outside of their normal musical styles -- Elvis, The Beatles, the Rolling Stones -- but they are the exceptions rather than the rule. There are so many more that crash and burn. This, my friends, is yet another sad flame out.

What might have worked better? Sticking to music that suits his voice. And let's face it, Ozzy has a distinctive voice with a narrow range. Songs like "In My Life," "Go Now," and "For What it's Worth" are great for vocalists with the range to do them. From Ozzy, they are fingernails on a chalkboard.

What did work on the album? To some degree, Mountain's "Mississippi Queen," and King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man."

I'm all for taking a risk -- but make it a calculated risk. My guess is that no one in the Osbourne camp is willing to admit that the emperor has no clothes.

- KARA - OZZY
Wow, listening to this conjures up visions of a drunken bar patron forcing his way onstage with a covers band and tipping them till they let him sing. How else to explain this flat sounding re-working of classic rock songs from such a seasoned vocalist like Ozzy? One needs only to the current Def Leppard "Yeah!" CD to realize just how lame Ozzy's "Under Cover" is.

Granted, this started life as 1/4 of a box set, where listening to it was an exercise in context. But to hear it as a stand alone document is a marker of declining greatness, and what one supposes is the inability of the Osbourne entourage to warn Ozzy that this really wasn't a very good idea. Ozzy's cover of "Women," a standard by John Lennon, is warbley wandering, a song in search of pitch and devoid of emotional impact. "Rocky Mountain Way" loses its uniqueness. Only on a mere three songs does Ozzy measure up to the material chosen here, and they are "Sympathy For The Devil" (he obviously relates to the subject matter), "Working Class Hero" (singer matches song) and "21'st Century Schizoid Man" (a natural counterpoint to "Iron Man"). Which means that "Under Cover" would have made a heck of a bonus EP for a full length original Ozzy CD. But as a stand alone? Strictly naptime.

- Good News/Bad News is
You don't have to buy the box set just to get the covers--but that's all they are, cover tunes. You can probably grab them off of Kazaa. The price isn't bad (cheaper on CD Universe though). He does choose some interesting songs to cover though.

- INCREDIBLY LAME!
Yeah, and I don't mean a little bit lame, I mean INCREDIBLY lame!
I can't believe this junk. Please, please, please, do not buy this album.
Oh man, I really hate to give OZZY a bad reveiw, he's been a true cosmic hero for soooo long! It really hurts to not give him a five star reveiw, but I can't do it here.
I bought the box set, not this one, so I haven't heard Rocky Mountain Way yet, however I cannot imagine it saves the rest of the material which was on the boxed set previously.
100% CRAP!
No ifs ands or buts about it, its complete garbage. You may as well spend your money on something more worth while, like a tub of poop.
OZZY no doubtedly phoned in every one of these tracks, and I don't know who is backing him but most of it sounds like a Sound Machine.
Nothing on here rocks in the slightest, Ozzy has no business covering most of these songs, and for the most part completley insults the original artists with these BUNK renditions.
The children who sing on ALL THE YOUNG DUDES don't help.

Now, I got the boxed set back in the spring, and though I was aware that it was a waste of money then, I got a pretty good deal on it, and I didn't care too much. It had some rare gems on it so I didn't say to much about the lame covers disc then.
Now he's got the gaul to release it as itself?
For years this man has had a bum rep and I have stuck by his name. I still think I will, we all make mistakes... I've enjoyed Ozzy's antics up until a few years ago when he remixed his first few albums and then took the originals off the market. That was utter disgrace. This is a minor quim, just be warned that this disc is a waste of not only money but also time, as you will no doubt witness an hour of your life scraped away by this load of crud if you partake.

Ozzy, god bless, let it go. You're memory cannot be stolen by your wife or kids- who I imagine are somewhat responsible for all of this nonsense, due to the fact that they are all trying to steal your fire. They are not now, nor ever will be the legend.. and thats not your fault. Just don't retard the past, ok?
