Steering from bubbly to witty to romantic to profane, McKay brings new life to the cabaret format, drawing influences from rock and rap. She has released two double albums and one single album. She played Broadway in March 2006 with Alan Cumming and Cyndi Lauper in Threepenny Opera, which ran a limited engagement to mixed reviews and for which she received a Theatre World Award for Oustanding Debut Performance.
