- pretty good, but rather peculiar

This CD is one of three 10-track, under-30-minute budget Monkees compilations put out by Flashback (the other two being I'm A Believer And Other Hits, and Daydream Believer And Other Hits). I think it's really a pretty good little collection (worth the small price I paid for it), but there are some things about it that I find rather odd, considering that it was the third in the "series" and didn't come out until '07 (the other two were released in the late '90s). For one, "Last Train to Clarksville" was actally the group's FIRST single! Not only that, but it was their first #1! (It's also the only real "hit" on this CD, although the "...and Other Hits" bit was still tagged onto the CD's title!) And, most of the songs on the CD (including "Clarksville") are ones that appeared on the group's first two albums! Just why none of those tracks were on either of the first two Flashback Monkees comps, I have no idea! (I'm especially baffled by "Clarksville's" exclusion from the first one!) Unlike the other two comps, this one doesn't feature any previously-unreleased material, but for some reason includes the "long" version of "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow") that appeared on the 4-CD Music Box set. (I do like the "long" version, though.) One thing about the CD that I think is sort of neat is that it includes a couple of songs that I don't think I've ever seen (in any form) on any other Monkees best-of (both of which are sung by Davy): "I'll Be True To You," which is a pretty good ballad from the group's first album (and which was first released by The Hollies --- whose version I think is better --- as "Yes I Will"), and "I Can't Get Her Off My Mind," which is a pleasant, jaunty little number from the Headquarters album (and the only Headquarters song on this CD). Despite this CD's peculiarities, I do like it (as well as the first two Flashback Monkees comps, which have some peculiarities of their own), even though there are many bigger and better Monkees comps out there. (By the way, another thing that I find strange is that none of the CDs in this "series" include the Monkees' theme song!)
