- The local rock group down the street is trying hard to learn their song.

This was a compilation of Monkees songs released in 1986. It is a well chosen collection of some of their best songs. There were also three new songs recorded for the CD. "That Was Then, This is Now" actually became their comeback hit, as well as their last hit. If you can find a cheap used copy of this CD, it's worth getting.

- Probably the best available set from The Monkees....

From 1966 to 1968 The Monkees were one of America's hottest acts on vinyl, scoring three #1 hits with "Last Train To Clarksville", "Daydream Believer", and the Neil Diamond penned tune "I'm A Believer", which ended up being the Monkees biggest hit, topping the Billboard Pop Chart for 7 weeks. 25 songs that adorn this collection pretty much cuts away the chaff and filler material found on The Monkees main album releases. However, deleting the obscure "Listen To The Band" and "Sometime In The Morning" and adding the minor chart hits "It's Nice To Be With You" and "Tapioca Tundra" would have been an improvement to this CD. Still not a bad set from Davy, Mickey, Peter, and Michael. Worth 4 1/2 stars instead of 5.

- That Was Then, This Is Now

Then and Now - The Best of the Monkees is one hour, twelve minutes and 32 seconds and released in July of 1986. Then and Now-The Best of the Monkees reached #21 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Album charts. It was the fourth compilation album to chart. The album has three new songs though only Mickey and Peter sang on them. While performing as a trio during the reunion tour Davey would leave the stage anytime the new songs were played. Davey would often site monetary reason for not recording with Peter and Mickey on the album. The biggest surprise about this album was the song That Was Then, This Is Now. It gave The Monkees a hit song climbing all the way to #20 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Singles charts and there first and only Adult Contemporary song to chart. If you remember MTV when it did the Friday night video fights, That Was Then, This Is Now was number #1 for several weeks. The other two new songs are Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere and Paul Revere and the Raiders cover version of Kicks. Most of the songs on the album are familiar Monkees songs. The asterisk next to some the song are songs that are on the CD but not on the vinyl version. I am giving Then and Now - The Best of the Monkees an AAAAA+++++.
