- Mary,Mary,Where Are You Going ?

The Monkees? Are these not the guys that can't play and their music stinks?Yeah, whatever. This is an excellent collection which includes the above mentioned song(which was covered by The Paul Butterfield Blues Band for all those who think the Monkees are not cool)with a slightly longer ending. It also includes "Valleri" with the complete ending. My personal favorite is "Saturday's Child" written By David Gates of the group Bread. All the songs are great and if you have the earlier Monkees Greatest Hits, you have something special indeed. But, don't take it from me, just kick back and listen to some great happy music.Highly Recommended!!!!!!!!

- I'd upgrade it, but it would be superfluous.

Purchased back in late '80s, I dug this tape out while going through some memories. If I remember correctly I purchased it specifically for the songs off Headquarters (which I had borrowed but had to return) and the song Words.

It's Arista, so it's after 1976's

, a companion if you will. Not the top hits, but nice songs. A very sentimental collection I thought.

If you were still frustrated you couldn't find the songs you had on 1969's

, this is for you. (It has Randy Scouse Git, Cuddly Toy , and Mary, Mary). At least back then.

Though it does have some things on it that I hadn't seen on any other compilations.

Namely:

Take a Giant Step, Saturday's Child

,

Sometime In The Morning, Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow -

You Just May Be The One, For Pete's Sake (Closing Theme), The Girl I Knew Somewhere (though this one has made it to several other compilations now). -

I would replace/upgrade this tape full cost, had I not bought these full albums on CD.

Apparently The CD has some changes, I think it's fair to assume the tape is the LP versions. Article - [...].

- good, but surpassed by many bigger and better compilations

Another early Monkees CD, Arista put this out as a companion to their Greatest Hits compilation, which was pretty skimpy, featuring only 11 songs and running for only about 31 minutes. While this CD is also short (with 12 songs but running for only 30 minutes), it does include some good tracks. However, only three of them ("Words," "Valleri," and "The Girl I Knew Somewhere") were actual "hits"; the rest of them, except for "Take A Giant Step," are songs that only appeared on albums. ("Giant Step" was also the B-side of "Last Train To Clarksville" but didn't chart, although this CD's liner notes claim it did.) There are a few major curiosities --- not concerning any of the actual songs per se, but how a few of the tracks sound on the CD. "Mary, Mary" seems to be an alternate take (with some different vocals) from the originally released one, or it sounds like it to me. "Saturday's Child" suffers, to my ears, from a rather sloppy-sounding mix. (And, since this is such an early CD, the overall sound quality isn't that great anyway.) The mix of "Sometime In The Morning" included here is vastly different from the "original" stereo mix, but I think it actually sounds much better. Oddly, "Tapioca Tundra" (which was a Top 40 hit) and "D.W. Washburn" (a Top 20 hit), which weren't included on the original Greatest Hits, are also absent here. Although it wasn't really a hit, I also find it rather curious that "Porpoise Song" wasn't included. This CD is good, but like the original Arista Greatest Hits CD, it has been surpassed by many bigger and better compilations --- most of which have better overall sound quality and include album tracks, non-hit single sides, AND most if not all of the hits.

- Valeri --

I bought the CD because Valeri was popular when I was in highschool. There aren't many songs written about us Valerie's! Several other songs brought back memories too.
