Single Minded: The Beatles, Coldplay, Radiohead

It’s Friday, which means that Single Minded devotes itself to rarities, remixes and mash-ups. Loo & Placido, “Black Beatles” [Mash-Up] Pick of the week by a mile: Two DJs mash up the Beatles’ “Girl,” a little Ludacris and “Let’s Get it Started” with astonishing results. We take this as proof that the Black-Eyed Peas can be great if you reduce the level of actual Black Eyed Peas in any one of their songs. This is the Single-Minded Weekend Jam Must. Coldplay, “Violet Hill” [Justice Remix] We know a few weeks ago we gave you a whole other remix of this song, but French duo Justice have somehow turned Coldplay into quasi-Goth-metal. Which we guess makes it okay to like them. Radiohead, “Nude (Played on a Printer)” [Um. Songs Played on a Printer?] Well, now the internet has truly done it: this is “Nude,” from the last Radiohead record, performed on a printer. That’s right, a printer. All you’re doing with your lame printer is making pictures of your cat for your desk at work. Manu Chao, “Politik Kills” [Dennis Bovell Remix] This is the kind of thing that makes our head explode: Rock en Espanol superstar Manu Chao gets stripped back to the basics by legendary reggae producer Dennis Bovell, resulting in a druggy dub version of his anti-politics anthem. The refrain is “Politik Kills,” over and over. Marijuana, apparently still okay. Phew! Ladyhawke, “Paris is Burning” [Alex Gopher Remix] So we’re going to get behind Ladyhawke, because her songs sound like lost ’80s classics before the remixers get ahold of them. Here’s another gem: lyrics that prettily pout about how Paris is screaming all night long.
