Joey Demaio estaba trabajando como técnico de bajo y encargado de la pirotecnia para Black Sabbath cuando conoció a Ross the Boss (Ross Friedman, o también Ross Funicello, ex-Dictators) que tocaba para Shaking street, los teloneros de Black Sabbath en esos momentos. Reclutaron luego al vocalista Eric Adams y al batería Donny Hamzik y ya con el nombre de Manowar grabaron su álbum de debut «Battle hymns», que incluía la canción Dark avenger con una narración recitada por Orson Wells. Después de esto cambiaron de discográfica y firmaron el contrato con sangre.
