- hollywood glam?
The second single off Madonna's dommed project American Life is also the second to be doomed. While the title track did manage a #37 peak, don't expect to see this song chart at all since airplay is scant.

6 tracks adorn this maxi-single. The first track is simply the radio edit of the original version which by itself is a rather Sheryl Crow-inspired kind of song (think the Sheryl Crow or Globe Sessions albums). A piece of quirky and retro rock that's marred slightly but an irritating and repetitive line "push the button" towards the end. However, as a Madonna single, it lacks the kind of punch that usually accompanies her singles.

The Jacques Lu Cont's Thin White Duck Mix is uninspiring mix that sounds a bit of 80's retro wrapped round the line "Everybody Comes To Hollywood." A tad repetitve for good.

The Micronauts Remix is interwined with delicious eletronic beats and slight retroness to it.

Tracks 4 & 5 are the Oakenfold Full Remix and Deepsky's Home Sweet Home Vocal Remix respectively. Both remixes are more upbeat and made for the clubs. Oakenfold's remix is a huge departure from his American Life remix. Here, he employs his creative remix powress to create a heady version of the song. Deepsky's mix, by far the best here, is a trance mix that makes full use of the original tune. The effect here is one that will keep you on your feet.

The last remix is the Calderone & Quayle Glam Mix. Though I am no fan of Calderone, this remix is sufficiently satisfying with all the drama of a typical Calderone mix. Definitely made for the clubs, this remix is heady and dramatic.

Overall, this Hollywood maxi-single trails behind the excellent American Life maxi. This is a disappointment from Madonna and Warner Bros. for this is not a strong single in the very 1st place. I await for the next.

- The remix used on the MTV Awards is on this CD
In case anyone was wondering, the "Thin White Duck" remix on this CD is the remix heard during Madonna's performance of "Hollywood" on the MTV Video Music Awards.

- The single that US radio djs overlooked !!!
Great danceable mixes with enough versions to satisfy any trend. Perhaps this is not the best single Madonna has released, but anyway, it is a pop melodic song with great lyrics and a catchy chorus. After the "American Life" single, this was obviously the correct single to follow after all the controversy caused by the first single and its "Wonderful" video. Living outside the USA gave me the chance to enjoy the original "American Life " video as well as the song over and over. I agree with many people. The USA were not ready to hear from its most famous pop icon that the American Dream is based solely on looks, power and money where nothing is what is seems. It's hard to admit it, but it's a truth well known around the whole world. Madonna dared to sung the wrong lyrics to the wrong country at the very wrong moment: Irak war (which by the way, has caused even more US casualties after the conflict "ended" ).
After my brief analysis, I don't wonder why US djs haven't played this song. While they have not declared openly a boicot to Madonna's records, that's what is obviously happening. All around the rest of the world, Madonna's "Hollywood" is Number 1 for the third consecutive week, with Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" at number 2, struggling hard to dethrone the queen of pop (not an easy task in a LOGICAL music world). "Hollywood" debuted at number 4 in the Billboard singles sales chart and has became Madonna's 30th Number 1 in the Club Play charts. How could you explain that this song has not earn enough points on Radio Airplay in the USA? As a result of this "Not declared" boicot, Hollywood is the first non charting Madonna's single on the Billboard's Hot 100. The only loosers are the US radio listeners which haven't been able to enjoy this nice song. I hope that US radio programers open their mind a little in order to embrace the next single "Nothing Fails" , an hybrid bewteen "Don't Tell Me" and "Like a Prayer". This is a deep catchy song that deserves a better luck. HIP HOP has dominated the Billborad Top 10 in the recent years. This is kind of funny because you don't even need to "SING" anymore in order to own the number one "SONG" in the USA.

- Madonna's 30th number one club track.
This is the second release fron the American Life cd and it finds the Material Girl doing some more self searching. This cd single comes with 5 remixes and a radio edit. This is Madonna and most .... will buy this no matter how good or bad the mixes are. The Radio edit(3:42) is good but needed the "Push The Button " part on it. The Jacques Lu Con't's Thin White Duck Mix(7:09) is good electronica with most of the vocals. The Micronauts remix(6:25) is good as well but is basically a dub mix. The Paul Oakenfold Full remix(7:01) is the second best mix here. It is electro with a lot of house thrown in and features the entire vocal of Madonna. The Deepsky's Home Sweet Home Vocal mix(7:34) is okay but doesn't feature any of the vocals except the "Push The Button" part. Disappointing!! The best mix is the Victor Calderone and Mac Quayle Glam Mix(9:22) and what most Club DJ's are playing. This track is more aggressive than some of his latest stuff and features the entire vocal of Madonna on it. Just another side of Madonna in her never ending trying and doing and being all career.

- Madonna Teaches Us A Thing Or Two About Hollywood
The past year has been a rollercoaster ride for Madonna. Her music has been very good, and her political statements have caused controversy not seen since the days of her sexual phases back in 1990. Her most recent album, the fabulous "American Life," had already boasted two Top 3 UK hit singles before the fantastic "Hollywood" stormed to No.2 in the UK in July 2003 to add to this list. The song is a fantastic upbeat single in which Madonna fearlessly attacks all those stuck up celebrities who roam Hollywood.

Hollywood begins with a wonderful guitar solo before the beat breaks out and Madonna sings, "Everybody comes to Hollywood. They wanna make it in the neighborhood. They like the smell of it in Hollywood. How could it hurt you when it looks so good?" Madonna then sings the chorus, "Shine your light now. This time it's got to be good. You'll get it right now yeah, 'cos you're in Hollywood." The beat then rises as more techno instruments are added, and Madonna sings, "There's something in the air in Hollywood. The sun is shining like you knew it would. You're driving in your car in Hollywood. You got the top down and it feels so good." The chorus is then repeated in a much more melancholy and down beat tone, before it rises again and Madonna sings, "I lost my memory in Hollywood. I've had a million visions bad and good. There's something in the air in Hollywood. I tried to leave it but I never could." The chorus is repeated again before Madonna sings the second verse again, but it is slightly altered on the second line where she sings, "I've lost my reputation bad and good." Then a wicked beat follows where two birds tweet in a catchy fashion and Madonna sings, "Music stations always play the same song. I'm bored with the concept of right and wrong." The first chorus is then sung again and the chorus is repeated once more. Madonna then sings "Hollywood" many times, before the beat drops and she says, "This bird has flown." She then sings the chorus once more and shouts, "Push the button! Don't push the button! Trip the station! Change the channel!" around eight times as her voice gradually becomes masculine! The beat then plays the song out slowly.

The video to Hollywood is good in my opinion, but nothing better. It features Madonna in many different costumes dressing up as icons from the past and dancing around like an anti-Hollywood nutcase! She makes her statements well and quickly before moving on to the next thing - which is the way that Madonna has always worked when it comes to her music. Overall I think that this is a great Madonna song, but it's no where near songs such as Die Another Day and Ray Of Light which follow the same techno/dance route. The video is, again, good - but not her best video.
