Tenor-saxophonist John Coltrane and guitarist Kenny Burrell are the alleged co-leaders of the two sessions included on this two-LP set but actually the second date (originally titled The Cats) was really under pianist Tommy Flanagan's direction; in fact Flanagan contributed four of the five compositions. Throughout, though, Coltrane is really the most significant soloist, whether on a brief duet with Burrell ("Why Was I Born"), in a quintet or (with the addition of trumpeter Idrees Sulieman) a sextet. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
