Location: Jena, Germany Eine Stimme wie Joan Armatrading hat fast keine in der Musikszene. Vielleicht noch Tracy Chapman oder Marla Glen, aber die sind ja auch wieder einzigartig. Nein, Miss Armatradings Stimme ist unvergesslich: sanft, tief, warm und damit prädestiniert für den lyrischen Blues und urbanen Akustik-Folk. Beide Genres hat Joan Armatrading in inzwischen über 35 Musikerjahren reichlichst bedient, und noch immer fließen die Songs ihr zu wie im Schlaraffenland. Alle zwei bis drei Jahre erscheint ein neues Album, 20 sind es bis jetzt an der Zahl. Vor allem in den 70er und 80er-Jahren verbuchte sie manchen Hit, wie „Love and Affection“ oder „Drop the Pilot“. Sie wurde als der weibliche Prince gepriesen, weil sie wie jener oft sämtliche Instrumente selbst einspielt, oder als „Jimmy Hendrix der Nylonsaiten“ aufgrund ihres virtuosen Akustik-Gitarrenstils. Im Prinzip aber ist sie immer ein Geheimtipp geblieben. Selbst mehrmals gecoverte Perlen wie „The Weakness in me“, der wahrscheinlich herzzerreißendste Song der Musikgeschichte, änderten daran nicht viel. Aber das ist ihr vermutlich auch ganz recht, denn seit den Anfangsjahren ihrer Karriere galt sie als scheu, ja gar schüchtern bis zur scheinbaren Arroganz. Einer solchen wurde sie auch von ihren ersten Produzenten verdächtigt, denen die talentierte stille Frau wohl nicht ganz geheuer war. Man schrieb das Jahr 1972, Joan Armatrading war gerade 22, das Kind von farbigen Einwanderern aus der Karibik und aufgewachsen in den weißen Arbeitervororten von Birmingham. Das passte alles nicht zum großen Musikbusiness. Schwarz, weiblich und englisch zu sein und zudem auf Talent statt Image zu vertrauen, das galt zu jener Zeit immer noch als “bad investment“. Doch Armatrading hielt mit Unterstützung von Produzenten wie Gus Dudgeon (damals auch Produzent von Elton John) durch und veröffentlichte 1972 ihre erste LP „Whatever’s for us“. Ihr drittes Album – schlicht „Joan Armatrading“ betitelt – wurde schließlich 1976 ein beachtlicher Erfolg und bescherte ihr den ersten Top-10-Hit. Nebenbei bereitete sie damit auch den Boden für weitere große Vertreterinnen des weiblichen Folk-Blues-Gesanges, wie Tracy Chapman, Lucinda Williams oder Marla Glen und wurde so zur Vorreiterin für eine eigenständige weibliche (und schwarze) Musik. Aus dieser Position heraus kämpft sie seitdem gar nicht mehr schüchtern gegen Ungerechtigkeit und Vorurteil. Sie trat auf Amnesty-International-Konzerten und bei WOMAD auf, ist Vorsitzende des „Woman of the Year“-Vereins und sang auf Nelson Mandelas 70. Geburtstag. Und schließlich – inmitten all dieser Aktivitäten – kletterte doch ihr neues Album „Into the Blues“ direkt auf Platz 1 der amerikanischen Blues-Charts, eine Grammy-Nominierung zu Anfang des Jahres inbegriffen. Da war dann die erste Nr-1-Notierung ihres Lebens. Manchmal setzt sich ja doch wahre Kunst durch, irgendwann.
