Su verdadero nombre es Giorgios Kyriacos Panayiotou. Su padre es grecochipriota y su madre es inglesa. George comenzó su carrera formando una banda llamada The Executive con su mejor amigo Andrew Ridgeley, compañero de la Bushey Meads School. No fue sino hasta que formó el dúo Wham! con Ridgeley en 1981 que el éxito llegó a la banda. Su primer albúm, Fantastic!, fue un éxito instantáneo, y después de un año, lanzaron su sencillo debút Wham Rap!
