Review - Amazon.com :
Emmylou Harris focuses more intently on her country ancestry with this 1979 record, tackling songs made famous by Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, and the Louvin Brothers. However, the most rewarding cuts are the lesser-known gems: Willie Nelson's rollicking "Sister's Coming Home" (with Tanya Tucker), Dallas Frazier's aching ballad "Beneath Still Waters" (which hit No. 1 for Harris), and Jean Ritchie's moving folk song "Sorrow in the Wind." Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt help out on "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues," while Lincoln Davis's accordion beefs up the Flatt & Scruggs classic "Rough and Rocky." This record, Harris's fifth for Reprise, signals the end of her classic country-rock period. She would unplug completely for 1980's superb Roses in the Snow before breaking up with producer-husband Brian Ahern and pointing herself in new directions. --Marc Greilsamer

- It doesn't get any better than this.
BLUE KENTUCKY GIRL was not only my introduction to Emmylou Harris, it was the first tape I ever bought. It's hard to imagine a better album in existence. The excellent uptempo country songs, "Sister's Coming Home", a duet with Tanya Tucker, a terrific version of Flatt & Scruggs "Rough And Rocky", or the masterful "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues", can transport you to the West. Her talents as an arranger shine through in all the songs, but her version of "Save The Last Dance For Me" is the BEST version I've heard of the song. "They'll Never Take His Love From Me" isn't any less spectacular. The #1 hit "Beneath Still Waters", is gorgeous with the excellent arrangements perfectly suiting Emmylou's beautiful voice. On "Hickory Wind" she improves upon the original arrnagements, and increases the emotion of the song. "Sorrow In The Wind" is a display of Emmylou's ability with harmony, and she sings it beautifully. "Everytime You Leave" is an excellent duet with Don Everly, the defination of a classic country love song. The musical master does it again on "Blue Kentucky Girl", as Emmylou Harris makes a classic. No collection should be without BLUE KENTUCKY GIRL. Once her sensational music comes into your life it doesn't leave. BLUE KENTUCKY GIRL is one of many crowning acheivements, by one of the most talented, intellegent, and creative performers of this century.

- The Only Album on Earth
If I was told that I could have only one album in the entire world, "Blue Kentucky Girl" would be it. This is an incredible collection of lyrics that make you feel like there is something precious in life and love, and that you're certain to find it in the arms of a lovely creature, if you listen to this album together.

- My first taste of Emmylou
Her voice is so beautiful. This CD is worth getting for "Hickory Wind" alone. I am not a big country music fan, but I like music that is well written and well thought out. This CD is a keeper for me, and the start of my exploration of Emmylou's music.

- Beautiful, but not much variety in mood and tempo...
This 1979 Emmy release was her most "country" up until that time, and while I am a "country" fan as well as an Emmy fan, this LP suffers just a little from having nearly all the tracks sound too much alike. Emmy has made so many albums that it is natural to dislike some...I, for one, didn't care for "Wrecking Ball" and believe that "Angel Band" is superior. That must certainly be a minority view! I wanted to love this 2004 remaster with two bonus tracks, and I expected to love it as much as the previous reviewers. Somehow, I don't. I'll play it, but not really often. Perhaps I have heard too much of Emmy over too many decades, and have moved on in my tastes. I can't fault her singing or the accompaniment here. I suppose my problem is song selection more than anything else. Nothing on this CD really grabs my heart and compels me to hear it again soon. So it is competent, but not quite great. My first Emmy LP was "Profile", a compilation of her early hits, and I still think that is a fine collection. If you are new to Emmy Lou, I'd suggest starting with that one.
