Watching DMX--baldheaded and shirtless, tattooed and musclebound--as he simultaneously goes platinum and gets arrested on rape charges (both of which occurred within weeks of this album's release), one can easily see the Yonkers, New York, rapper as a Tupac in training. And he's certainly no stranger to dumb thuggery on his much-anticipated debut. But unlike Tupac, who tempered hard-core beatdowns with party pick-me-ups, DMX is strictly business, part of a street reaction against the Puff Daddy-fueled, late-1990s slew of lightweight pop-rap crossovers. With a name too true for its own good, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot could occasionally use a cool breeze of levity. That said, the record is not without merit; despite the album's largely standard-issue beats and rhymes, both DMX's forceful voice and solid production have moments of greatness. - This album is completely misunderstoodIt's Dark and Hell is Hot is DMX at his best, before Swiss Beatz took over and DMX felt compelled to drop an album every 6 months. Every song on this album is brilliant and allows you to see in the twisted psyche of a very dark individual. Even songs like "Ruff Ryder's Anthem", "Crime Story", and "ATF" allow you to see the attitude behind this album, which was X was ready to go though whatever and whoever to get what was rightfully his (if you don't belive me, then just listen to "Stop Being Greedy.") This album is so honest and lamentful and songs like the absolutely brilliant "Convo" pull no punches. Definitely cop this album and listen to the great DMX before he turned pop.

- Keepin' it real! Keepin' it rough like a true Ruff Ryder!Keepin' it real is what DMX does! He takes you along on a ride thru the streets. Showing you how it goes down. Hit the streets with D and learn from the Top Dog! He puts the streets aside and concentrates on the inner struggle. The struggle between good and evil. He contemplates the spiritual side of life. People might hear gunshots and foul language, but try and see past all of that. Have you never been so angry that you curse and scream and if anyone were to hand you a weapon, you swear you would do something to someone!? Love, Hate, Joy, Pain. He tells it how he knows it! Don't judge a book by its cover! With 4 albums all gone to nr1, he has earned respect only few rappers have and this with not as many albums. But who's standing in the spotlight? Keepin' it real! No Doubt! Ruff Ryder to the core! Dark Man and Tupac! The 2 realest! Peace

- Grea Stuff for a 1st AlbumI didn't know him I eard him on "24hrs to live" with Mase & LOX, "Money,Power,Respect" with LOX and Lil'Kim. But I hear in his voice something different than the other rappers. When a friend made me listen to "It's Dark and Hell It's Hot",that was it! I run to the store to buy it! This is one of the best album you might listen to in years. He's no 2pac but he shines his own way and the lyrics come from the bottom of his heart. When you listen to the album you'll feel like he lives to rap. Though some songs didn't appeal to my ears, over all you will not regret buying such CD. Buy it even it's for the hits like "Ruff Ryder's Anthem", "How's it going down" or my personal favorites like "The Convo", "I Can Feel it" and "Stop Being Greedy"
