AARGH! The CD case lists the complete album versions of "Love Hangover" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," but the idiots at Motown put the 45rpm versions of these songs on the album. I hope this is a temporary screwup and not an intentional lie. The CD is only 61 minutes long; surely there is room for the complete album versions (which would result in about seven extra minutes of music). The two stars are for the music, which is wonderful, of course. But somebody's head should roll at Motown for stating that the complete album versions of these songs are on this CD, since they are not! This is the reason I bought this CD! Conveniently, there is no "quality control" number at Motown listed on this CD; nor is there a web site. Disgraceful! I hope Ms. Ross is reading this!

By now, most of you know about the unforgiveable mistake Universal/Motown made with this CD (listing album cuts that were actually singles). What I want to report is that the CORRECT VERSION WITH THE ALBUM CUTS IS OUT THERE AND IS GREAT--YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO LOOK FOR IT. The CD has a sticker on the outside packaging that says "A Motown Classic - Remastered and Restored!" This sticker was originally a red background with white writing. The corrected versions of the CD have the label as a WHITE BACKGROUND WITH RED WRITING. I was told about this from Harry Weinger at Universal/Motown, who supervised the release of this CD. I searched for months for this CD with the correct sticker on it, and didn't find it until last week out in Scottsdale, AZ of all places! Of course, what Motown should have done is recall all the CD's and re-release the corrected ones, but the bottom line is if you can find one with the sticker with the white background and red writing, this is the corrected CD, and the sound quality is breathtaking, as well as the songs being the right length.

She wan't the first legendary black performer, but she most certainly is the most successful. This set, a revamped, remastered issue of the original 1981 LP, chronicles the stylish post-Supremes singles that elevated Diana Ross from 60's pop sensation to 70's and 80's superstar. All the really big hits are here: the early soulful Ashford and Simpson collaborations ("Reach Out And Touch," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Remember Me,"), her trademark dramatic ballads ("It's My Turn," "Touch Me In The Morning," "Theme From 'Mahogany'," "Endless Love"), and her blood pumping dance records ("The Boss," "Love Hangover," "I'm Coming Out," "Upside Down"). This edition of the album adds two of Ross' more daring hits--the swingin' "Last Time I Saw Him" and her heart-stopping rendition of Billie Holiday's "Good Morning Heartache" from 'Lady Sings The Blues,' neither of which, oddly enough, made the cut the first time. While the new "Motown Anthology" covers much more ground, and her RCA hits are nowhere to be found, "All The Great Hits" gives fans the songs that launched a solo icon.

I have had this album on the original '91 cd reissue for 10 years. Originally, when I was 12 years old, my Mom's boyfriend at the time tried to win me over by giving me a boombox and some of his Motown and R&B cassettes. This was what first introduced me to Diana Ross, beyond the Supremes hits I heard on the oldies station at the time. I cried the first time I heard "Touch Me In The Morning". It moved me in that little girl's heart kind of way, (although at 12 the lyric "touch me" made me blush). I loved this cassette and never quit listening to it.

To this day, I think it is the single best Diana Ross one-disc compilation. The remastered sound on the '91 was TERRIFIC to begin with, so I don't understand why people are saying that this reissue of the reissue has better sound, unless it is a little louder.

However, I feel that the Supremes medley was wonderful! The songs flow in an emotionally appropriate way and her best work with the Supremes is in it. And thank god it does not have the tacky canned beats added in like they did with the first Supremes medley! This medley fits better than the two newly added cuts because originally, this cd was about half artful disco (7 cuts) and half lush ballads (7 cuts) + the Supremes medley. To add "Last Time..." and "Heartache" messes it up a little because one is country/swing and the other is jazz. And also, "God Bless The Child" is in my opinion much better, though it wound up on the B-side of the single way back in the day.

The only vast improvement on this cd reissue is the addition of extensive liner notes from the original LP.

It's interesting that Diana has kept up with the time over the years. She started with the "Girl Group" fad of the 60's, moved on to the "soul" kick in the early 70's and jumped on the disco bandwagon in the infamous "Last Days of Disco" (79-81) with Upside Down, I'm Coming Out, and The Boss (my personal fav). Whether you're a hardcore Diana fan or a newbie, this CD is for you!
