10 Things to Watch Right Now That Are Not The Pope

If you're like me, then hearing The Pope speak while visiting U.S. soil is kind of like hearing a nun's virgin fingernails scraping down the chalkboard of loneliness. Perhaps its his thick German accent, which is akin to a comically bad actor auditioning for a bit part as Nazi #8 (though, to be fair, my Juden papers are in order). Or the quality of his voice, which could be described as a more feminine Kathleen Turner. Between us, I find his red shoes sort of strange. Not to sound harsh, but I'm a Pope John Paul II girl myself. At the age of 4, my Jewish parents yanked me out of my dinner seat and sped to downtown Miami, just in time to see JP2 roll by us in his bullet-proof pope cage. And in 2001, I had the privilege of spending Palm Sunday at the Vatican, where once again I saw his gigantic headpiece (and only his headpiece) slowly roll by above the thousands of religious folk standing on chairs in order to catch glimpse. Plus, he looked hilarious when fending off vicious white birds. But this Ratzinger guy -- for God's sake he wears red shoes! To quote Marge Simpson, "No thank you." So for those of you who, like me, are trying desperately to avoid the Germanic drone of his United Nations speech, currently hijacking over 90 percent of the airwaves right this second, here are 10 Things To Watch Right Now (Other Than The Pope): 10.
