10cc Biography
|
10cc are an english pop band that achieved its greatest commercial success during the 1970s. The band initially comprised four members, Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, who had written and recorded together for about three years before taking on the name of 10cc in 1972. The original four-piece lineup of 10cc boasted a wealth of talent -- there were two strong songwriting teams (although combinations of all four members collaborated on some songs), all four members were skilled multi-instrumentalists and vocalists, and each could perform convincingly as lead singers, leading to favourable comparisons with The Beatles. In 1976 Godley & Creme left, releasing records under that name before making a significant contribution to the development of the music video in the 80s. Stewart and Gouldman continued as 10cc, adding musicians for live work and albums, achieving their third UK number 1 in 1978 before they began to fade commercially. There were some desultory releases in the 80s and 90s, including one uninspired reunion of the original line up that discharged a contractual obligation, before Stewart ended his association with Gouldman. The latter still occasionally tours with other musicians as 10cc. There is much speculation about where the name of the band comes from but the general consensus was that it is named after the average amount of ejaculate in a single male orgasm. However one will find that the average is only 3cc and that this is an urban legend and that the name in fact comes from a dream. Jonathan King, the person who signed them, where he dreamed of a band called 10cc topping the charts in both the UK and America. (http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/10cc.asp)
